R&B Genre Magazine

This presentation consists of rough annotations of positive points which I have found in a cover of a music magazine, a contents page and a double page spread all of which are from R&B genre music magazines. This presentation will help me by letting me refer back to my annotations as all of these pages posses many features I would like to develop into my music magazine such as similar colour schemes and style.

Reader Profile

This is my reader profile for my music magazine, this profile includes information on basic facts which I would need in order to help me create my future magazine. The information which it consists of will help me to create my magazine by being able to link the likes and interests of my reader to areas which I can include in my magazine to make it more attractive to my audience.

Focus Group Questions

The pictures in the presentation above are the results of my Focus Group questions, I've decided to use this method in order to show the process of my questions and how these questions will help in the future to creating my magazine.

Music magazine - Quantitative research

This is the introduction to my analysis research, showing my results of which I have collected from my participants who took my questionnaire survey and how this will help me in the future.

Questionnaire

Click here to take survey I have decided to present my questionnaire online so I waste less paper and be more tech savvy, I think this method will be more beneficial as I can get my data at a quicker pace and also a wider range of results as the questionnaire is on Web 2.0. Using the site, I will send the survey to people I know through various different social network sites such as Facebook and twitter in order to give me the privilege of collecting more data.
Although I am using SurveyMonkey to collect data, I will also print some copies of my questionnaire in order to extend my results even further, to give me more of a range of results.

Music magazine questionnaire

These are the questions which I will ask people in order to gain some basic knowledge on which genre I should choose to base my music magazine on. After gaining the results from these questionnaires, I will use this information to create various formats (e.g. bar charts, frequency diagram) of showing the data I have collected. Using this quantitative questionnaire, I will then create another set of qualitative questions which I will ask my focus group in order to finally choose a genre of music for my magazine.

Music Magazine
This is a short questionnaire where I will collect results in order to help me gain data for my AS media project so please circle one answer for each question.

1.      If you were to buy a music magazine, which genre would it be?
Rock               R&B                 Chart music/Pop       Indie               Electronic/House

2.      What do you think would most attract you to any particular music magazine?
Title                Artist on the cover               Colours           Layout of cover

3.      Why do you/would you buy a music magazine which features your favourite genre of music?
Keep up with the latest gossip on artists               Latest news in the music industry
Incentives (competitions, posters etc.)                 Latest interviews with your favourite artists

4.      Which one of these do you prefer or have heard of?
Billboard        Q         Vibe        Kerrang      XXL     NME

Research Rationale

The target group which I have easiest access to are teenagers who will be aged 15 – 19 as these are the people I see every day and because I know them personally, will be more willing to answer the questions I will provide. Although this target group is most likely to be the one I will use most, I also have access to young adults such as my sisters, smaller group of friends and family (21 – 30 years old) and adults who will range from 35 – 50 such as parents, family members and neighbours. Finally, I can also ask older adults such as 55 – 70 such as parents and other family members. This will allow me to gain a wide range of data in order to give me more of an idea in which genre to choose. Although I have access to a wide range of various age groups, I will most likely set my focus group to be on teenagers as this is the group which are most likely to be interested in the genre which I will pick and I have easiest access to.

There will be two main parts to collecting my research. One of these will be preliminary information (quantitative data) such as a questionnaire where I will ask straight forward, closed questions which are most likely to require a one worded answer from the participant. The second part of my investigation will be interview like questions which I will ask my focus group; these questions will be qualitative as I am going to gain as much information from them by using open questions. Using the first set of questions I will ask people of all ages the questionnaire like questions (quantitative) as these are easier to put the data into graphs so the results are easier to present. To make my data fair, I will ask the same number of people in each age group to complete my questions, (for example; 3 teens, 3 adults and 3 older adults).

The brief for this course

Our media brief starting in 2014 is to create a music magazine cover, a contents page and a double page spread featuring a potential music artist. We have been looking at previous students’ magazines’ (with the same brief) and looking at the pros and cons which will help us in creating our own. The areas in which we have been focusing on the most are camera shots, layout of the magazine, colours and how these all fit with certain music genres in order to gain the best potential for our music magazine.
I have looked at various genres of music magazines’ including Rock, Pop, Indie, Country and Classical. For inspiration for my own future music magazine, I felt that my genre should be chart music (pop), although I am not yet 100% sure. To reach this decision, I looked deeper in to the similarities and differences’ between most popular chart music magazines’ across the world such as Billboard, NME and Q. These have already inspired a few possible ideas for some information I could include on my cover or contents page as I will be able to use current and contemporary music news.
I will look deeper (market research) in to what genre I feel there is a gap in the market and use this information to help me make my decision on which genre to base my music magazine on.
